Hello everyone!
I am Takuchanman.
I went on a trip to Okinawa and saw beautiful banana trees, and here I would like to write an article about banana imports.
I think everyone in Japan eats bananas for breakfast and snacks.
I remember I used to eat them before club competitions because they improve water absorption. Bananas are popular because you can buy them in supermarkets all year round and they are easy to eat, but most of them are imported.
Most bananas are imported, and although everyone thinks of bananas as yellow, they are green when they are imported! Let me explain in some detail.
First of all, Japan imports most bananas from the Philippines.
Most of the cheap bananas you see in supermarkets are from the Philippines. And all of these bananas are imported green at the time of importation.
This is stipulated in the Plant Protection Act, which is “a law that regulates the import and export of plants by inspecting them to prevent the spread of harmful plants and animals”.
In simple terms, bananas are safe when they are yellow because they are full of pests, but not when they are blue because they are free of pests.
To put it in more detail, when they are still green, there are no pests because they are not sweet yet, and when they turn yellow, they start to get pests because they start to get sweeter.
For this reason, when bananas are imported, they are imported in their green state and then exposed to gas and temperature control in Japan to prevent pest infestation, before being ripened to a yellow colour and put on shop shelves.
People buy bananas in their yellow state after maturing, but if they are left for a few days without being eaten, they often turn brown immediately.
Many people think that the colour changes and damages quickly, but this can be prevented in a certain way.
It is ‘hanging’!
If bananas are left on the ground they will quickly discolour, but hanging them will keep them growing and prevent them from discolouring. You can also try this out.
