As previously mentioned in Fullpota, there are surprisingly many characters themed around the cute image of strawberries, including Sanrio’s “Strawberry King.” Let’s delve deeper into these strawberry characters.
Sanrio’s Strawberry King
The Strawberry King, a character by Sanrio, made its debut in 1975. Appearing in the Strawberry Newspaper, it became one of Sanrio’s main characters. Over time, it evolved to include seven angels – Dandy, Tommy, Taffy, Candy, Socrates, and the darker characters Baby and Stinky. The Strawberry King, known for its unique ability to fly using a strawberry stick, is expected to continue spreading its charm worldwide.
Local Characters
There are an overwhelming number of local characters, each unique to their region. These include Chitchi, Amatchi, Ichigokun, Berry-chan, Moukapyon, Maroni☆E-r, Cottberry, Tochigokun, Yumezukin-chan, Yoshimin, Hana-chan, SUN Mushikun, Hirokawa Machiko, Ichigo Musume, Snowberry, Saru No.1, Ichigo-chan & Ichigokun, Kinokawa Purupuru Musume, Sanberry, Kirara-chan, Otochan, and Hanada Mo-Ichi-kun. While many of these characters feature faces on strawberries, some, like Saru No.1 from Fukushima’s Iwaki City, wear strawberry hats and end their sentences with “Ki.” Maroni☆E-r from Utsunomiya City, Tochigi, is a trio of anime girls from Tochigi TV’s dedicated anime site. Hanada Mo-Ichi-kun, the mascot of the “Mori no Ichigo” tourist farm, is a surreal character with strawberries growing on the head of a cow carrying many strawberries on its back.
Anime Characters
There are also anime characters related to strawberries. In “Tokyo Mew Mew New♡,” Momomiya Ichigo is a bright, energetic girl with a strong sense of justice who transforms into Mew Mew for battles. Her weapon is named Strobe Bell, and her finishing move is Reborn Strawberry Check. Hoshimiya Ichigo, the protagonist of “Aikatsu on Parade!,” is cute and naturally airheaded, with catchphrases like “Here we go!” and inspirational lines like “I will catch up! I’ll shine as brightly as the sun without losing!” Kurosaki Ichigo from “BLEACH” appears intimidating but is actually kind-hearted and family-oriented, with a strong spiritual sense. His favorite foods are chocolate and spicy cod roe. Sakata Gintoki from “Gintama,” while not having “Ichigo” in his name, loves strawberry milk and strawberry sweets like strawberry parfaits, and even wears strawberry-patterned underwear.
It’s surprising how many characters and themes are associated with strawberries. In the 30th episode of Fullpota FM, the members discussed anime and manga, diverging quite a bit from fruits (laughs). They passionately talked about topics from shojo manga to The Matrix, GANTZ, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, Chainsaw Man, and One Punch Man, making it a must-listen episode for anime and manga fans. If interested, please give it a listen.
