I’m Kobay from Fullpota.
It’s midwinter (as of January 2023 when I wrote this), but this time I’m going to talk about watermelons.
Do you know what watermelon splitting is? You blindfold yourself, spin around a stick and lose your sense of balance, then start walking towards where you think the watermelon was last seen, while listening to the information (which may or may not be true) given by the audience, and swing your stick down at the position where you think it is… It’s a major summer activity.
However, I don’t hear much about watermelon splitting these days. I’m a parent of a junior high school and elementary school student, but I’ve never heard them talk about watermelon splitting. Maybe it’s not an exaggeration to say that it’s an urban legend??
I live in the metropolitan area, but there aren’t many detached houses with gardens where you can do watermelon splitting, and if you do it indoors or in an apartment building, the watermelon pieces will fly around and stick to the walls and ceiling, making cleaning a hassle. If you get stains on them, you’ll have to look up at the ceiling every winter and think,
“Ah… That stain on the ceiling that I made that summer… It stands out…”
As if we don’t have enough stress every day, we don’t want to be reminded of the stain on the ceiling every day like Sisyphus.
When you do watermelon splitting and hit the watermelon by chance, the flesh of the watermelon becomes fragments and scatters around. Well, I think some people can imagine that just by that, but watermelons are often compared to human heads. I won’t use any specific expressions, but sometimes you can see expressions using watermelons for incidents or accidents (please search on Web if you are interested).
That’s probably because according to some researches, there was an activity in ancient China where they buried prisoners’ heads in soil and smashed them as part of war. Some people claim that this was substituted by using watermelons.
Well whether this is true or not aside from that point , somehow I can understand it intuitively. Even we modern people compare watermelons to human heads.
